Mission 1217 Project
In 2009, The Embers, a historic Mt. Pleasant landmark, was aquired by Grace Church. The address of the building is 1217 Mission street, so, appropriately, Grace has given the name "Mission 1217" to the overall project of renovating the Embers property. There are 5 strategic visions, or streams, flowing behind the Mission 1217 Project and each one is about spreading God's love and grace into the lives of people in this community. Use the links below to find out more about the history and vision behind each stream.
Quality Third Place
Fall 2004 :: Grace had the desire and vision to provide the community with a quality "third-place". (Third Place - the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two environments of home and the workplace.) The Third Place stream impacts every other stream as our desire is to provide a welcoming environment for mom's in ministry, internationals, and our weekend service guests. It will also allow us to draw attention to both local and global compassion needs through varoius events that we do in the new building.
All Nations House
Summer 2006 :: In light of our commitment to "bless nations" and seeing our growing fruitfulness in this area, we pursued and developed blueprints to construct what we referred to as an "All Nations House", that would be located in close proximity to CMU. This place would serve International Students and families by providing them with a place where they could feel welcomed, comfortable, and safe, as well as provide additional space for a variety of church ministries. In the end, we realized that more time was necessary to allow this value more time to "season" into the congregation.
Children's Ministry
Spring 2007 :: With the need for additional childrens ministry space increasing rapidly, we had the vision of bringing all children under one roof, instead of having different age groups spread out between several different buildings in the downtown area. Although we evaluated over 24 different buildings and scenarios in central Michigan, nothing really seemed to meet our needs and be worth what people were asking, until The Embers.
Local and Global Compassion Ministries
Fall 2007 :: Our burden for local and global compassion ministries expanded to incorporate several large scale relief and support projects, such as our Love Mt. Pleasant and AngelFood campaigns. Part of these projects included providing food relief...and we began to envision how much more of an impact we could make if we had the space and ability to store and refrigerate significant amounts of supplies at any given time. For example, with the numerous walk-in freezers, refrigerators, and storage space, we would be able to purchase bulk food (at a cheaper rate), store it safely and distribute as needed. At this time, The 1217 project was brought back on-line and pledges were made by the congregation.
Moms in Ministry
January 2008:: We developed a comprehensive plan to minister to "Moms In Ministry". This ministry would serve to help coordinate babysitting for families involved in ministry at Grace. Fall of 2008:: The vision of a first class third place was rekindled and expanded (with The 1217 building in mind). The purpose is to provide a comfortable and excellent environment where the church body and our local community could cross paths and build meaningful relationships.
God has been so faithful throughout the course of this project. While there is still much to be done, we're grateful for all that God has provided. To give you a better idea of where the resources have been allocated up to this point, take a look at the following spreadsheet: Mission 1217 Resource Breakdown. If you'd like to support the work at Mission 1217, read on to learn more about our next projects and find out how your gift will make a difference.
$112,000 allows us to:
| Finish the Tease | $11,224 |
This covers the remianing trim and furniture needs in the Tease area.
| Rear Lobby (w/ furniture & bathroom) | $37,951.92 |
This is going to be the family entrance at Mission 1217. We are excited to open this area up, provide an easily accessable bathroom, as well as create a welcoming space for our weekend guests.
| Front Lobby (w/ furniture)* | $13,543 |
This amount reflects the flooring, painting, drywalling, and furniture needs of this space.
| Kitchen Phase 1 | $15,000 |
This covers the necessary demolition, framing, electrical, plumbing, and flooring needs for the Kitchen space.
| CM Lower Level | $15,035.56 |
The Li'l Church and Kids Church age groups are going to be increasing in numbers over the coming years. This provides for enough cubby systems to meet their needs. In addition, this will provide a double door entrance to the lower level CM space. This will greatly help drop-off and pick up processes.
| Main Stairwell | $11,971.26 |
This stairwell will allow a smooth flow of traffice from the Front Lobby down to the CM Lower Level. This will provide a much better flow for guests during our weekend services.
| Equipment for Hospitality | $7,000 |
This will cover the equipment needed to brew fresh coffee on a weekly basis for services and other events.
* Several individuals have already taken on and covered the Coffee Bar expense as a part of the Front Lobby. So, this number does not reflect those expenses. This reflects the flooring, painting, drywalling, and furniture needs of this space.
Get Involved!
During one of our weekend services, Barry went through some ways our church can get involved now. If you missed it, check out the video and the list below.
- Own the Blueprints - Give them a look over, add your ideas, if you have any questions ask them. You can send your thoughts our way by clicking on the Comment link at the top of this page.
- Fast and Pray - Nehemiah is our example in this. Instead of rushing out and starting the work, he rushed to the Lord in fasting and prayer.
- Enter in to the rebuilding of community - If you feel detached or have never really connected with the body, get involved! Doesn't have to be with things related to the mission 1217 project, but any opportunity in the church. Find opportunities on the web or ask someone. Come to prayer in the mornings! etc. etc.
- Share Jesus with someone this week - Do what it says!
The Gates and Walls of Mission 1217
Throughout the project we've been studying Nehemiah during our weekend services and have been encouraged by the way the building project was structured and how it was accessible to anyone who was willing to work. In the same way we would like to give our body the opportunity to get involved with areas that they feel passionate and gifted to serve in. We've broken down our own building project into over 60 sections. Take a look at the sections listed in the pdf document below, and see if there's an area that you'd love to serve in.
