What Should I Bring?

Pilgrimage

Below is a list to let you know what you should bring. Paying attention here will avoid many questions at a later time. Experience has taught us many things, so take a close look at anything in parenthesis. Some people are able to borrow equipment, while others prefer to spend money on nicer gear, clothes, and equipment. Don't feel like you need to spend a fortune on these things. Most people are able to borrow or make do with what they have at home.

Clothing

  • One long sleeve single layer polypropylene shirt
  • One short sleeve fast-dry t-shirt
  • One pair of durable active wear/camping pants (A lot of people use nylon, you just want something that won't hold water)
  • One pair of underwear (Shorts or swim bottoms work well)
  • One pair of cotton socks to wear during the day (always wet)
  • One pair of wool socks to wear at night (always dry)
  • One pair of camping type, durable sneakers for during the day (broken in)
  • One pair of sandals for at night
  • One lightweight fleece and raingear (Or you can get some jackets that double for both essentially)

Must bring when cold (below 50 degrees)

  • Winter cap, windbreaker, warm layers, extra pair of wool socks

Advisable to consider when cold (below 50 degrees)

  • One pair of gloves or mittens
  • Possible long-johns for upper body and legs (Or double layer, long sleeve shirt or t-shirt)

Other

  • Bug net and bug spray
  • Water bottle
  • Handkerchief
  • Cup and spoon (cup must have handle and must not crack with hot liquids in it)
  • Headlamp or small flashlight
  • Contact solution or other necessary eye-wear and any necessary medicine
  • One larger towel, soap, shampoo, for when you shower in the park at the end of the trip
  • 1 or 2 gallon bags (2 gal. Work best)
  • Some form of photo ID (only if a Canada trip)

Totally Optional

  • Biodegradable shampoo, small hand towel, toothbrush and toothpaste, camera

Note

Weather can change drastically; it can be 80 degrees during the day and 40 degrees at night. Please be prepared. Also, avoid heavy cotton materials, they are useless when wet.

To break your shoes in: soak your feet in water for 2 minutes with your shoes on, then go run for 10 minutes or so. Or just go running with them a couple of times.
